About the Casa de Cultura Britânica
The Casa de Cultura Britânica (CCB), a British Language and Culture Centre, was established on 4 December, 1964, during the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) administration of Chancellor Antônio Martins Filho, through Resolution No. 166 of the University Council. Originally named the Centro de Cultura Britânica (British Culture Centre), it began its academic activities on 2 August, 1965, under the coordination of Professor Newton Teophilo Gonçalves.
In 1968, the institution was integrated into the Department of Languages as part of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) Basic Restoration Plan, approved by Decree No. 68.279. Subsequently, in 1973, it became part of the Humanities Department (Decree No. 72.882) and was renamed Casa de Cultura Britânica (CCB), the designation it continues to hold today.
For over six decades, CCB has served as a reference point in the teaching of English language and culture at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). Among its key responsibilities are the administrations of the English courses and the English Reading Proficiency Examination (EPLLI), an essential requirement for all graduate programs at UFC and at other universities and colleges throughout the country.
With topnotch teaching materials and a faculty and staff of highly qualified professionals, CCB is committed to academic excellence. It supports both the university and the city communities not only by providing outstanding English courses and reliable certification of proficiency but also by fostering the development of advanced reading strategies.
Postgraduate students who demonstrate reading competence may proceed directly to the examination, while those requiring additional preparation are offered the Reading Comprehension Course (CCLLI), designed to develop efficient and field-specific reading skills and whose certificate is accepted by graduate programs at UFC.
Through this dual role, examining and teaching, the British Cultural Center reaffirms its mission to promote linguistic and cultural proficiency as an essential foundation for academic success.
